The trade in drugs was already recognized as a global problem requiring a global solution at the beginning of the 20th century. In the first international conference on narcotic drugs held in Shanghai, China in 1909. To control production, trafficking, and abuse of drugs a multilateral system is working over the following decades.

By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction is a disease that affects your brain and behavior. When you are addicted to drugs, you can not resist the urge to use it no matter how much it cause you harm. Drug abuse may lead to (dependence syndrome), which involves a cluster of physiological, behavioral, and cognitive phenomena in which the use of substances takes on a much higher priority for a given individual.
Drug addiction isn’t only about using heroin, cocaine or other illegal drugs. It also includes painkiller, alcohol, nicotine or other illegal substances.
What is the difference between drug abuse and drug addiction?
Drug abuse is when you use legal or illegal substances in ways you shouldn’t. You might take more than the regular dose of pills or use someone else’s prescription. You may abuse drugs to feel good, ease stress, or avoid reality. Usually, you’re able to change your unhealthy habits or stop using altogether.
Drug Addiction is when you can’t stop. Not when it puts your health in danger. Not when it causes financial, emotional, and other problems for you or your loved ones. That urge to get and use drugs can fill up every minute of the day, even if you want to quit.

The term “illicit trafficking” can be defined as illegal “trading, selling or dealing” in specified goods.

On 26 June 1987, two important texts (Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Outline of Future Activities in Drug Abuse Control & Declaration of the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking) were adopted at the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was held in Vienna during 17-26 June 1987. The Conference recommended that an annual day should observed to mark the importance of the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Both the dates 17 June and 26 June had suggested. And in the later meetings, 26 June had chosen and written into the draft and final resolution.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has, over the years, been actively involved in launching campaigns to mobilize support for drug control. The UNODC often teams up with other organizations and encourages people in society to actively take part in these campaigns.
Many campaigns, rallies, poster designing and many other programs conducted. People from different countries together celebrate the day. As people are in more use of drugs we need this day and it is also important.
